Couple awarded custody of granddaughter & arrested for child porn

When a decision has to be made regarding where a child should live following the break-up of a family, the court involved tries to makes the best decision possible. Awarding custody of a minor child is an important decision that could have a long lasting impact on that child's life. Families in Virginia and everywhere could face a similar situation in the event of a dissolution of their family.

One such case has resulted in a court's order of custody that may not now be in the best interests of the child involved. A number of months ago, a judge ruled that the grandparents would be the better placement for a child. The biological mother and father were in apparent agreement regarding this order. The father is the son of the grandparents, and the couple was not married. The grandparents had three children, two of whom were raised and out of the home.

The grandfather, who was a police officer, and his wife have now been arrested and charged with having and supplying child pornography. The charges have not indicated if their own children or granddaughter were included in any of the images. Family members are not convinced that the couple is guilty of any wrong doing.

The great-grandmother of the accused couple's granddaughter has asked to be given custody of her since the accused grandparents are not able to provide for her right now. While this is most likely a rare situation, many families may face difficult choices when it comes to the best care and custody of a child. Virginia does provide many resources to families that may be seeking information concerning custody, visitation, or other concerns that can affect families. Having access to information and options that may best serve children, can be a comfort to families that could be dealing with the sometimes challenging situations that can arise.
